The EBTS France association event, held in Sicily on September 2022 was a truly unforgettable experience, etched into the memories of all who attended. EBTS means European Boxwood Topiary Society France, and its members are deep involved in the protection of ancient and châteaux gardens, especially when examples of the topiary’s art are maintained. The event, a sensory feast that delighted the senses in every way, was the annual celebration of the prestigious association, and was organized for 54 members.
The first chosen venue, close to Catania, was totally unexpected. The guests appreciated the astonishing garden, so well maintained and enriched with exotic plants. Inside the venue, the ambiance was one of refined elegance, with opulent décor and lavish furnishings befitting the French aristocrats in attendance. The air was filled with the tantalizing aromas of Sicilian cuisine, as the owner prepared an exquisite feast with her family’s recipes. The garden party was successful and memorable. Each bite was a revelation, a symphony of flavors that danced on the palate. From tasty pastas, aromatic herbs, and sun-ripened tomatoes, every dish showcased Sicilian’s gastronomy.
From that special moment on, the guests had the opportunity to explore Sicily’s rich cultural heritage. Guided tours took them through archeological ruins in Syracuse, ancient theaters in Taormina, magnificent baroque’s towns in Noto, a black stoned volcano. The sight of ancient Roman’s mosaics left an indelible impression on their memories.
Evenings were spent under the starlit sky, sipping Sicilian wine and sharing stories with the friends, members of the association. The sound of laughter mingled with the soft strains of traditional Sicilian music, creating a sense of camaraderie and joy. We visited numerous original and hidden gardens, located mainly east Sicily, nestled amidst the rugged landscapes and sometimes adorned with topiaries. These gardens, often surrounding beautiful houses and venues, are private and never priorly set for gatherings and events, and they are a testament to the rich history of Sicily, with traces of ancient Roman and Moorish influences evident in their layout and design. Stone pathways wind through manicured lawns, leading guests past bubbling fountains, fragrant citrus groves, and secluded alcoves adorned with fragrant flowers. At the heart of the gardens, a grand courtyard or terrace served as the focal point for our celebrations. Here, under the dappled shade of ancient olive trees or fragrant jasmine vines, guests gather to socialize, dine, and revel in the beauty of their surroundings. Sometimes, they could listen to a small orchestra playing Sicilian music, and even dance on the Godfather’s songs.
As the one-week event draws to a close, guests bid farewell to Sicily with a mixture of sadness and gratitude. Sicily’s ancient gardens and venues allowed them to create memories together, which would linger in their hearts and minds as a testament to the beauty and magic of this enchanting island. Sicily had left an indelible mark on their souls, a timeless reminder of a truly unforgettable experience.
